The Picnic Areas

The museum has a delightful picnic area beside the mill leat and you are welcome to bring your own picnic or take your Restaurant meal outside.

Even after 200 years Coldharbour Mill is still a working factory. The wool we produce has been spun on the machines you can see operating during a tour. As such we pride ourselves that not only is our wool of the highest quality but that through our production we are continuing a tradition in practice since 1799.
All proceeds from the sale of our wool, tartan cloths and woven rugs goes towards the restoration and preservation of the factory and mill site.

Coldharbour Mill worsted knitting yarn

The Mill produces knitting yarn in a variety of shades, which is available in ARAN and DOUBLE KNIT. We process 100% pure new British wool, blending several colours together to obtain our beautiful flecked shades.

Our current yarn shades available are:
BLUEBELL – DEVON GREEN – TARTAN GREEN – PLUM – BRITISH WHITE – RUSSET – JADE - FUCHSIA - MAROON

The Devon, Somerset & Blackdown Hills Tartan Collection

These high quality and beautifully designed worsted tartans are woven exclusively at Coldharbour Mill and are also available for making into Kilts By Lindsay.

The Devon Tartan:

Designed by Roy Sheard in the early 1980s, the green Tartan reflects the beauty of the glorious Devon countryside, whilst the blue Tartan symbolises the county’s two coastlines celebrating Devon’s long & illustrious connection with the sea.

The Somerset Tartan:

A delightful tartan of pinks, blues and blacks depicting the Somerset countryside.

1.5 m (60 in) wide - £36 per metre

Blackdown Hills Tartan:

This magnificent new tartan designed by Coldharbour Mill Engineer Ian Gammon, portrays the outstanding natural beauty of the Blackdown Hills.

The Museum Carding Service

Do you have some fleeces that require carding before hand spinning? Then why not send in some of your fleeces to be machine carded here at the mill. We can card your wool quickly and efficiently. N.B. The fleece must be thoroughly washed (dry to touch).
Carding is charged at £8.50 per 500g + VAT
